LocationPutnam County is south of I west of Lake Oconee. History: Putnam County was first inhabited some 5, years ago by Archaic Indians. Later, a distinct culture of Woodland Indians inhabited the same site and built an effigy mound. Putnam County. Putnam County was created in from Owen and Vigo Counties and unorganized territory. It is located in west central Indiana. The county seat is Greencastle.
